Wizard Rifle

Wizard Rifle have one of the best band names I've ever heard.  People ask what's in a name?  Well, when you have a name like this, it draws some attention your way.  Maybe some folks give you a listen just to hear what a band named Wizard Rifle sound like.  Then, when they hear the music, they're in.  Give them a listen and you will be hooked.

The album starts off with “Crystal Witch”.  There's a bit of atmospherics to get things going, then a tribal rhythm materializes, and when the incantatory vocals start, you find yourself caught in the spell of this song.  Not sure if it was just the way it worked out, or if that's the way they planned it given that “witch” is in the song title.  It's a great opening track and gets things started in the right way.

The first track leads right into the second, “Buzzsaw Babes”.  This one and the third track, “Paul The Sky Tyrant”, are examples of this band just letting it rip.  There is great interplay in both of these songs between the various instruments and the vocals.  These guys are heavy in the sense of a band like Mastodon.  They are not really playing any crushing death metal, or thrash, or doom, but this isn't anything soft and gentle either.  Both of these tracks hit you right between the eyes.

All of this leads into “Psychodynamo”, which for me is the centerpiece of this release.  The tempo slows a little compared to the previous 3 tracks.  The heaviness drops out for a bit, and you can really hear all of the things that this band is capable of.  There is an undulating riff that moves in and out of this track, it circles back on itself, but it never quite does what you think its going to do, always zigs when you think it should zag.  And then the song builds and gets really heavy and the last few minutes just crush.  It's psychedelic, its got some great stoner-ish riffs, its got just a little bit of everything.  And its a great song.

The album wraps up with “Beastwhores”, which starts out sounding like it might be a jazzy little number.  But then it steps up and hits you hard and reminds you that Wizard Rifle do pretty much what they want to do.  They also do it very well.  If you are looking for a little change of pace in your metal, or just heavy music if you want to think of it that way, this an excellent example of a band doing their own thing and not being so wrapped up in it that they lose the listener.  Well worth the listen.  These guys are out on tour right now so catch them if you get the opportunity. - Chance

Hollow Earth

Hollow Earth, from Detroit, Michigan, a place where crime, poverty, and desperation are at a high, out of that comes this slow, doom-filled, bombardment of anger and frustration that I honestly can't remember hearing in a long, long time.

I listened to their VERY recent release on Panic Records titled Silent Graves, and I have to say, it is a killer album. I would not change anything. Except maybe the length of the album. I need more. Everyone would benefit from more.

The group is on a huge tour, starting TODAY going all across North America (Canada too) and if the closest show wasn't 6 hours away, you would have a chance of seeing me in the crowd. Very tempting to make the trip, and I urge everyone to support their tour when they come through your city.

Wind Cries Mary

Writing again for Canada, no reason for it, other than damn do they know how to make some good music.
Right now I'm jamming out to Wind Cries Mary, a group out of London, Ontario, and they are actually playing a show TONIGHT with a previously posted band (Bring Me The Author) so small world.

The sound I'm getting is fast, heavy, groovy, well executed, and melodic all at just the right times. There is something that is detrimental to the success of a band that they have done, and I applaud these gentlemen  for the incredible quality of the recordings. The tracks are layered very well, nothing is being drowned out by guitar or vocals, very well done.
Another thing that I still enjoy, is the use of sound clips, and gang vocals. Just things that should never die when it comes to the composition of music. Nothing here is crammed with fancy effects, though some are used, it is done tastefully.

I'm not just talking about one particular song here, I sat and listened to the recent uploads, but if I had to chose a favorite, I would say it is "Syrian Standoff" from their 2014 release titled Infinity (be sure to get a hold of that somehow)

Bring Me The Author

Haven't written a review for a band outside of the United States in a while, no discrimination here, just happened. But I could not have picked a better band to write about, I am a person that likes precision, and Bring Me The Author sure delivers.

This is a band that sounds just as good live (if not better) than they do on their recordings. They remind me of The Fall of Troy and the Alaska album from Between the Buried and Me, with energetic guitar riffage and a dynamic vocal delivery like those two bands.

It would really be a good idea to see what this band has, because you will be a better person for it.

Please share this band, as well as any other bands on this blog, with your friends, family, children, spouses, strangers, and your pets too if you're that kind of person.

Korotory

I an a huge fan of old-school Thrash and just metal in general, and I'm happy knowing that there are people out there still making music that way, just heavy, fast, aggressive music.

Definitely not like some founders of the genre, not to name anyone (starts with an "M" and rhymes with
"retallica")

Korotory keeps to their roots of what they call alternative to the alternative, thank goodness for that, or else I wouldn't be so glad to have stumbled across them on my search for bands to review (hint hint)

Of course there are modern things brought into the mix including but not limited to, audible bass guitar, tempo changes, blast beats, Arnold Schwarzenegger quotes , and the good old breakdown. This is a band that you will not get bored of listening to, I sure as hell am enjoying myself, and will continue to thatks to these FREE DOWNLOADS they have available on Reverb Nation.

Give Korotory a listen, download their music for FREE, and see them in a venue near you!

Devil in the Details

There's nothing quite like seeing the energy you can feel through the music. And that's why you put together a live music video, so that people know you go buck-wild when you perform. Another great thing is when the video is done well, not just a bunch of clips put together to your music just for the sake of doing it.

The band Devil in the Details from Omaha, Nebraska (confirmation there is something in Nebraska worth seeing) knows how to put some energy out there, do they ever stop? Its great when a band comes together and actually tries to do things well.

Other than describing this as energetic, its metal-driven punk sound is killer, and I actually enjoy their use of clean vocals, I usually just tolerate most bands.

Set Sights for South

Bridge Burner.

That puts a thought that says, "I'm moving on from this, connections were lost, and shit happened."

That is what this song by the South Orange County band, Set Sights for South is all about.

I used to hang out with the guitarist/vocalist Tommy, several years ago now though. And I'm glad I've followed what he's been doing because it is good.

The band has been working hard at writing and recording for the upcoming EP Life Support, playing shows all around their area, and pumping out jams all at the same time.

Please enjoy this, follow them, and see them when they come to a venue near you!

Momentous

There's something about a "call and answer" that really just gets me hooked into a track.

Listening to "Dark"
By the Austin, Texas band Momentous. A very fitting title for this song, for sure.

Every riff makes you bounce and bob along, well executed changes in the melodies.

I also like that the introductory notes stay on, almost like "Dark" is telling a story.

together PANGEA

I was scrolling through my Facebook one day, and the regional weekly news had posted about this band that was coming to town called together PANGEA. And I thought to myself, "that's a weird name, I'll check it out." and I watched the music video for "Snakedog" and found myself bobbing along to it, until the first guitar solo came in and I was hooked INSTANTLY.

Formed in 2005, the LA band has released their third full-length album titled Badillac and Jesus "Crab Fishing" Christ is it a good album.

They tour and play shows like goddamn machines, and its probably only a matter of time until they release another album (fuck)

But they just released the music video for the title track "Badillac"

You just know they were obliterated the whole time, and that's perfectly fine with me just keep on doing stuff like this.

And that will do for now.

AN ESCAPE FOR LOUIE

I'm going to do something different that I'm hopefully going to keep going, and that is posting covers that bands do that I like. And I really like this cover.

This first one is coming from Cros De Cagnes, France, and they are An Escape for Louie with a fantastic cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic" that is just like I said, fantastic.

If you're expecting to listen to one of those "pop goes punk" style tracks then prepare to be disappointed because this almost sounds like they wrote the track themselves it is that well done. The band's motto is "Play it loud for best result" and the results of this track are loud, heavy, and with the best results possible.

I hope to review other tracks by this band, and the band of the Vocalist that was featured in the track Of Aimless Glory sometime soon.
Thanks for letting me review this, I wish you all the best.

Fake Messiah

I was expecting this to be one of those metal bands that has a female vocalist and they try to be Arch Enemy or something and add all of the clean singing and still be metal.

I did not get what I was expecting, this girl can scream, growl, and she can do it damn well. The band is called Fake Messiah, they are from Switzerland, and they are releasing new material and a new album very soon.

The song is pretty good, I am just blown away at how good this vocalist sounds, I recommend listening to this when you have a moment (or two)

Centinex

WARNING: This band is HEAVY. Seriously, if you suck and can't handle the heavy shit, get out while you still can.

With a name like Centinex, I was expecting something heavy, and alien sounding. I was NOT disappointed in the least. Something about a fast riff, and gang vocals really lifts my spirits.

The Swedish band is preparing to release the comeback album "Redeeming Filth" November 21st in Europe and December 9th here in North America. They have been a band since 1990, disbanded in 2006 and are now relaunching themselves at audiences everywhere!!

Upcoming shows:

25.10 2014 CZE - Pilsen - Phantoms of Pilsen Festival
26.06 2015 GER - Protzen - Protzen Open Air

I'm listening to the track "When Bodies are Deformed" from the upcoming record over and over, it sounds like Cannibal Corpse and Slayer had a baby. And I'm glad to have met this amazing offspring.

Listen here:

Check out Centinex and be sure to order the album "Redeeming Filth" available soon in Europe and the United States in just around a month now!

UPDATE: New tracks have been released, and I am getting stoked for the release of this album!

Lever Interview

This Chicago band is making new music and trying to get their EP "Brainwashed" out as soon as possible for you to hear!

Here is their Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/LeverBand

And you can access their music here!

http://www.reverbnation.com/LeverBand

They are Lever, and they are a very 90's sounding band.

Here is an interview I did with them:

What is your most memorable moment on stage or at one of your shows?
Jeff - I would say when we did an acoustic open mic at The Drunken Donut in Joliet, IL. It was our first time stepping foot in the place and we didn't know what to expect. We figured that no one would be there, but there was a good amount of people that showed up. We played one of our songs called "Best For Last" and people were singing along to it. I couldn't believe it. I thought I was hearing things.

What was the best show you have played so far?
Jeff - I can't speak for everyone, but we played a show in Chicago earlier this summer for this house party called Shanleypalooza. The energy and the reaction from the people watching was amazing. Everyone was really into it. It was probably the most memorable show to me personally.

If you got the chance to go back in time and play ANY show, festival, or event, ever, what would it be?
Jeff - Opening for Nirvana at the Metro either in 1989 or 1991 would be awesome
Jon - Woodstock 1969
Ariel - Ramones live at CBGB
Mike - opening for Nirvana during their In Utero tour

Describe the weirdest person you have met at one of your shows.
Jeff - That's a tough one because we're usually the weirdest ones.

What kind of vehicle/equipment do you tour with?
Jeff - If we can, we'll use Ariel's green van. It fits all of our equipment and all of us with room to spare. If for whatever reason we can't use the van, then we'll use my GMC Jimmy SUV and one other car to fit all of the gear, but it's a pain in the ass to take 2 separate cars. A band should travel together in 1 vehicle.
What is your favorite song to play live?
Jon - "Who Cares"
Jeff - "Who Cares"
Ariel - "Identity Crisis"
Mike - "McFly"

Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Jeff - Hopscotch, and jumping jacks. If we're really nervous we'll do the hand-jive.

If you could change one thing about the music scene, what would it be and how would someone do it?
Jeff - Well, Joliet has a great music scene going on. They have a place called The Joliet Bakery (Aka The Drunken Donut) and that place is always packed when bands/artists/comedians perform. It's a hot spot for local music and it's growing thanks to the help of Angie Morrison, Sean Senffner, Corey "Moondog" Myers, and Katie Dulny. We're not from Joliet, but more places should be like that. A lot of talented musicians are coming out of that area. I wish Chicago had a scene like that. Fans and musicians support each other and they have a sincere love for music. It's hard to find places like that. When it comes to music in general, I think people need to be more open minded and try to seek out music that doesn't just play on the radio. Too many people are close-minded when it comes to music.

Which one of you has the best, and the worst day jobs?
Jeff - I would say that Jon has the best day job. He's a student video technician at NIU. Our drummer, Mike used to work at Chuck E Cheese and that job didn't sound too fun.

What foreign country do you want to play at the most?
Jeff - I can't speak for everyone, but anywhere in The United Kingdom would be pretty cool.

What is your main goal right now?
Jeff - We want to get our EP "Brainwashed" out to as many people as we can. We want this band to go as far as we can take it. It would be cool to eventually make a living from this band. We'd like to tour and just keep this going, because this is what we love to do. We take it very seriously.

So you sit down to record, and you somehow manage to go to youtube or reddit or whatever, what are you watching or reading while procrastinating?
Jeff - We're either watching music/concert videos or stupid/comedic videos like Tim and Eric or Key and Peele. We have a weird sense of humor.
Do you guys prefer cats or dogs?
Jeff - Cats.
Jon - Dogs
Ariel - Cats
Mike - Cats

Sunquake

I listened to a song by the French band Sunquake today, and I have nothing to say other than I'm very impressed by the quality or their recording, and the dynamic changes of the song.

They remind me a lot of bands like Between the Buried and Me, The Contortionist, or Mastodon. And that to me a a really good thing. Probably closer to The Contortionist, but I feel those band's vibes in there.

Please take a moment to listen to this band's latest single, and keep on the lookout for new things from them coming soon!

SLEEPLESS

SLEEPLESS is a band from Aberdeen, Scotland and though they haven't played a show yet, they've got the sound of a band that's been around for a while. The track "The Enemy" reminded me of STRUCTURES first album "All of the Above" and The Ghost Inside.

If you're a fan of either band, you have to check out SLEEPLESS!

Diary of Snow

I first listened to this guy Jordan LaFaver, and his project Diary of Snow a couple years ago, and to be honest I wasn't a huge fan. It was okay, but it didn't do a whole lot for me. Probably because I was in some phase where I hated anything without breakdowns and a frustrated daddy's girl screaming about his problems half-assedly.

It had been a while, I recognized the name Diary of Snow as I was sorting through the reviews and I said "I should really give him another chance, I was a giant dick." I am very sorry Jordan, but I really like what you've done here.

It is not often I like a pop sounding song outside of rock bands, this is that exception.

And I'm glad I did, I'm listening to the track "Hunter" a track that Jordan seemed to work really hard on, because not only does he use a recording from a radio interview he did, the song is SPONSORED BY MT-FUCKING-V.

And if that isn't sweet, I don't know what is and I should just go back to bed.

Static Signal

I picked up on these guys really fast for some reason, I felt pulled into the track "Hold on" by Static Signal, its got a swaying, rhythmic sound that I'm really enjoying tonight.

If you're a fan of 90's rock like Pear Jam, or newer rock like 3 Days Grace, please listen for your own benefit.

This 5-piece from Illinois has got shit nailed down, man its just a good time listening to them. Really. Seriously. For real, I downloaded their songs after listening to them for a bit, and I strongly suggest that you listen and do the same.

Electric Theatre

Ending my weekend listening to the Bristol, UK based band Electric Theatre was a good choice, it really was. This is the first band I have reviewed that is outside of the United States as well!

They have a sound that can be described as a "hardcore Foo-Fighters" but way less whiny sounding haha.
I listened to their song "Special Features" a few times (and then downloaded it)

I always listen to the music as I write these, it helps me get more of the feeling at the time on here, and honestly I'm just so focused on listening to this song over and over that I can't concentrate in this, so listen of you won't be late for anything because time passed me by listening to them. They will be releasing an album sure, so follow up on that on their accounts!

Thanks for the song guys!

Cunt Cuntly Interview

Joe DeSalvo from Dracut Massachusetts band Cunt Cuntly, and Scribe of Existance sat down and let me ask him questions for a bit!

Joe and I also plan on having a Skype interview sometime very soon which will be posted on here for you all to see!

What is your main goal right now?
Scribe of Existence. For anyone reading this SOE is a project me, my friend Dave, and Luke and Jake of Acrania are working on. Im soooo excited to show everyone what we got. The songs are more progressive, and are very influenced by Born of Osiris and Veil of Maya. But have that Deathcore kick also. With Luke on Vocals and Jake on drums it should be super killer!

What is your greatest accomplishment so far, and how would you be able to top that?
Mayhem fest 2012 probably. My old band won a battle of the bands run by Sumerian Records and got a spot to play Mayhem in 2012. We played right before Whitechapel and Upon A Burning Body. Being there before doors with all the bands just walking around was a new experience and very cool. I could top that in many ways, hopefully, Im hoping to play shows as CC soon like I said so lets see what happens in the future.

So you sit down to record, and you somehow manage to go to youtube or reddit or whatever, what are you watching or reading while procrastinating?
I frequent r/space and r/morbidreality whenever I'm on reddit. As far as Youtube goes it can be anything haha, I love watching shitty music videos from bands I don't like. There is a bunch of good documentaries on Youtube also.

What is your most memorable moment on stage or at one of your shows?
I've puked off the side of a stage before from being nervous in the early days when I started playing shows in my old band. That or once our keyboardists gear wasn't working, then someone came up to us after the show and told us how much he loved the keyboard elements in the songs.. I'm 95% sure he was serious.

What was the best show you have played so far?
Mayhem fest 2012 without a doubt. After that probably this show we played with All that Remains and Emmure. If you got the chance to go back in time and play ANY show, festival, or event, ever, what would it be? ANY show would be Wacken 2009 or 2011. But that's pretty unrealistic, I love shows like that and I want to go to a festival overseas next year. North America is cool and all but Europe has all the sick stuff. Other than that I wanted to try and open for Born of Osiris in 2011 with Veil of Maya, Carnifex, Structures, and Betraying the Martyrs at a local venue we frequented.

Describe the weirdest person you have met.
Other than the keyboard guy, probably ********

If you could change one thing about the music scene, what would it be and how would someone do it?
People need to keep the negativity to themselves! Its fine if you dislike a band but posting about it constantly is annoying. No one really cares if you hate Asking Alexandria, we get it. You can share your opinion without being an asshole. No need to make fun of people for their tastes either, its just ridiculous. I'm confident that there is no way possible to stop this from happening, people tend to focus on the negatives sadly.

What is the best and worst day job you've had?
Best day job was probably this car auction I used to work at. I got paid $20 an hour but it was only one day a week. I would never sleep before I would go in so I was always falling asleep on the job. I'm surprised I didn't get fired. Worst was this paint store I used to work in. Hated it. My boss was a jerk. I delivered pizzas in Nashua NH for 9 months and that was crazy. Saw a man get shot, another man hit by a car and nearly die in the road, another man beat his girlfriend for money to buy heroin. Crazy shit.

What's the weirdest thing you've eaten while you're locked away recording?
Bread dipped in Italian dressing, or port wine cheese with croutons. Ill eat anything if im hungry enough.
What foreign country do you want to go to the most?
The UK to hang with my SOE friends (Acrania). Other than that probably France or Australia.

If you could collaborate with any person, living or dead who would it be?
For newer bands without a doubt Born of Osiris or Thy Art Is Murder. People have compared some of my songs to them a few times so working with them would be a miracle. Older bands probably Slayer. I LOVE thrash metal and writing some fast blistering riffs with Kerry or Jeff (:/ rip) would be a dream come true. But that'll never happen haha.

Gravity Calls

From North Berger, New Jersey there is a band. A band that truly delivers a sound that instantly drives itself into your memory.

This is a band that you find yourself bobbing your head and tapping your feet along to, and then you go, what is this band?

They are Gravity Calls.

I listened to their song "Phantom Command" on their Soundcloud today, and I downloaded it just like you need to when you listen to it. The vocalist/guitarist Josh Daniels give me a Eddie Vedder vibe while the bassist and drummer Chris Mendez and Alphie Aguilar keep a strong and energetic rhythm.

"breath life out now, she’s spilling wastefully
afraid we won’t survive, but somehow she sleeps
We’ll miss so much of this sad, sad world
Never around cause she sleeps through everything"

Somewhere in Between

I was caught off guard by the jazzy feeling that punched me right in the face, and then a right hook by the metal breakdown into a proggy wonderland.

The name is spot on for the band, they are Somewhere in Between, a "plural" genre band from good 'ol Texas that seeps energy and emotion from their music.

Learn more about the band here:

The song "I Know" kept me on my toes the whole track because I did not know what was going to happen next, 100% serious about it, please give them a listen, and make sure to keep tabs on them!

Throne of Eden

Throne of Eden is something that I haven't heard for a long time style-wise.

It reminds me very much of the metalcore Avenged Sevenfold with the vocal traits of Deftones but with more bells and that creepy feeling you get from realizing the plot twist in a movie.

I invite you all to listen to their song "Tombstone Lullaby" and enjoy it as much as I did, not even kidding this brought back memories man haha.

The lyrics seem very thought out, and are incredibly delivered by this Jasper, Alabama band whom I wish the best of luck to.

Why do we regret our errors?
Our questions know the answers.
One day we'll sing where we lie.

I want to show around this band that nobody knows of but you ABSOLUTELY SHOULD take the time to fall in love with their music just like I have.

They are Aurelia, and they hail from Windsor, Ontario,
follow them at their facebook, here.

"What comes out of Windsor? A silver lining?
That silver lining left a long time ago, and our silver lining now is that it might just come back one day.
No.
What comes out of Windsor is imperfect.
It's filth.
And grime.
And pain.
A shortness of breath from all the shit in the air.
And the overwhelming sensation everyone wants to get the fuck out of here.... well, we do at least.
That's where our music comes in.
We get out by letting all of you in.
We share just as much with our city as we do with the music we make."

Described as "sloppy hardcore" they really seem to have things nailed down when it comes to their sound.
No song will leave you thinking "was that the song I listened to before?"

Working hard all the time, currently they are looking for places to tour around Canada and the reasonable United States because they are releasing their 3rd(?) ep quite soon.

Take a listen, and share them around to your friends, and keep checking in for more bands, and more from Aurelia.
